The DBT works with a local, regional, national, as well as international perspective. It is specialised into interactive methodologies, involving trans-disciplinary research, stakeholder involvement, citizen participation, political deliberation and advice, and public communication. Especially in the domain of stakeholder and citizen consultation, connected to policy analysis, the DBT aims at being at the forefront of praxis.

The DBT has historically emphasized the importance of citizen participation and co-creation in technological development, administrative planning, and political decision-making. In its 30 years of methodological development it has built a world-class skillset for the facilitation of trans-disciplinary dialogue and solution-oriented research. In the latter years we have followed closely and contributed extensively to the development of the concept and practice of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI).

Its research is interdisciplinary, combining philosophy and history of science, STS, science ethics/bioethics, risk and complexity theory.

Today the Centre has a staff of about thirty-five people, with research fellows, post-docs, and permanent academic and administrative personnel (the latter are part of the joint administration with The Centre for Women and Gender Research).

Specific fields of research are emerging and converging technologies, precautionary risk governance, Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), food, energy, security and climate change, ethics and integrity, focusing on governance aspects on the intersections of science, technology and governance.

Central in the approach within SVT is the concept of double competence: all our scholars are able to understand from the inside what is going on in the field they study and are philosophically informed about, and be able to critically reflect on and cope with, the epistemic and normative presuppositions of their own approach and their field of research. Given the wide background and experience in double competence based interdisciplinary research, research ethics and integrity, end-user engagement, and knowledge quality assessment, SVT brings unique expertise to the RECIPES consortium.

SVT has a key-role in WP1 (taking stock), WP2, both in developing the analytical framework for the case-studies and leading the case study on neonicotinoids, WP3, especially tools for ethical assessment and development of guidelines and has smaller contributions to the other WPs.

It conducts research on this subject and organises debates on science, innovation, and new technology. We are part of the The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Science (KNAW). Today the institute employs around 50 people. It is based in The Hague, The Netherlands.

The Rathenau Instituut works on the basis of an institutional decision by the government. Every two years we determine which issues require attention. We do this after input from the public and from experts in our programme panel and board. The institute is unique in combining expertise in broad areas of research with an understanding of how science is actually practiced and how science, technology and innovation are embedded in society. That means that it is adept at analysing and managing the many different factors involved in an issue.

In 2019-2020, we hope to fuel 4 debates:

Digital society: shaping our own digital future

Making perfect lives: examining new care options

Knowledge ecosystems: the knowledge society of the future

It carries out scientific technology assessment (TA) on a variety of topics. The results of this work support policy-makers, administration and the public with regard to issues of technology policy.

The Institute of Technology Assessment was founded in 1988 and currently has approx. 25 employees with interdisciplinary backgrounds.

ITA is an Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OEAW). Approximately two thirds of the ITA's work is financed through the budget of the OEAW and one third stems from third-party funds.

The ITA carries out interdisciplinary technology studies with three aims:

to understand the complex interplay between technology and society from multiple perspectives,

to concomitantly analyse technology development, and

to contribute to socially responsible technology policy by advising policy-makers and society.

In particular, the ITA analyses unintended impacts of socio-technical change: many new technologies make life easier, enhance productivity, or reduce environmental impact. However, they may also lead to new dependencies, social conflicts and environmental problems.

Technology assessment investigates these impacts and deals with topical issues in specific subject areas. At the ITA, researchers from the natural and the social sciences as well as engineering work together in interdisciplinary cooperation.

The ITA’s work is practice-oriented. In our analyses we include practical knowledge from experts, stakeholders and users, which were obtained through participatory methods. Our research contributes to scientific knowledge, evidence-based advice to politics and society, and to the advancement of technology assessment methodologies.

Within the RECIPES project the ITA is responsible for the Case-study 5: Nanotechnologies.

Its research practice is transdisciplinary, transformative, and co-creative. The institute cooperates with partners in academia, political institutions, administrations, civil society, and the business community to understand sustainability challenges and generate potential solutions. A strong network of national and international partners supports the work of the institute. Among its central research topics are the energy transition, emerging technologies, climate change, air quality, systemic risks, governance and participation, and cultures of transformation. The IASS is funded by the research ministries of the Federal Government of Germany and the State of Brandenburg.

Within the IASS, the RECIPES project is led by the Systemics Risks group. The group’s research analyses the various interdependencies between technology, nature, and society with a particular focus on complexity, uncertainty, and ambiguity. On the basis of this analysis, we aim to identify common patterns and structural features of systemic risks. Finally, we seek to identify policy instruments and methods of governance with the capacity to alleviate systemic risks

DIALOGIK is a non-profit research corporation which investigates communication and coordination processes in contemporary societies. Since its founding in 2003, DIALOGIK has been dedicated to research on risk, participation, and the inter-relationships between technology, science, and society.

DIALOGIK investigates complex processes of communication and interaction in the conflict-laden triangle of politics, economy, and civil society. It employs highly skilled scientific staff (today about 20 full time or part time researchers of which almost half hold a doctorate) and graduate and undergraduate student assistants. The disciplinary backgrounds of the employees range from sociology, political science, administrative science, communication science to geography, biology, agricultural sciences and environmental sciences. Several staff members are certified mediators.

The research team has special expertise in social scientific approaches and is familiar with methods and advanced techniques of qualitative and quantitative social research. In its research DIALOGIK employs mainly discursive methods of investigation. This means, that the research team uses structured dialogue in order to systematically collect information about perspectives, arguments and values of social groups and individuals and includes this information into its analyses. In its research work DIALOGIK brings together theoretical reflections about the role of dialogue and participation in political, economic and social life on the one hand, with the development and conduct of innovative dialogue and participation processes as well as the use of established processes, on the other. This allows us to learn continually through an iterative process of theoretical development and practical validation.

We have successfully used and further developed our expertise in more than 150 international and national projects since our foundation in 2003.

DIALOGIK is financed exclusively by third-party funds. Its projects are funded by the European Commission, the German Research Foundation (DFG), federal and State ministries, higher federal authorities, public and private foundations, and other grant authorities and clients.

Within RECIPES DIALOGIK is mainly responsible for WP4 Policy Dialogue.
